Electrical Inspection Agencies on Long Island

The electrician finished the basement circuits on Thursday, the drywall crew is booked for Monday, and the permit says nothing gets covered until the electrical inspector has seen it. On Long Island that inspector does not work for the town. You or your electrician call a private agency.

Long Island towns and villages generally leave electrical inspections to private agencies. Your electrician pulls the permit from the town or village, files with one of the agencies on that town’s approved list, and the agency inspects the work and issues the certificate. The building department needs that certificate to close the permit, and PSEG Long Island needs it before it sets a new meter or service.

Why the town sends you to a private agency

The Town of Huntington states that it does not conduct electrical inspections. Electrical work tied to a town building permit needs a certificate of approval from an authorized inspection agency, the permit holder hires and pays that agency, and the approval is part of getting a Certificate of Occupancy.

Islip says the same thing a different way. Its building department accepts electrical approval certificates from any of the agencies on its list. Brookhaven tells permit holders to contact their chosen agency before any work begins and ask for its application and inspection procedures.

Villages work the same way. The Village of East Rockaway’s electrical permit application has to come with a completed application to an East Rockaway approved inspection agency, and the form says all work must be inspected and certified before it is covered up. The village charges $75 for a residential electrical permit and $150 for commercial, and says the agency’s inspection fees are separate. The Village of New Hyde Park posts its own list of approved electrical underwriters for the electrician or owner to call.

The agencies on Brookhaven, Islip and New Hyde Park’s lists

Brookhaven’s list is dated November 1, 2024 and Islip’s December 5, 2024. Both name the same nine agencies, though a few addresses and phone numbers differ between them. New Hyde Park’s list was posted in April 2022. Call the agency to confirm before you rely on a number here.

Brookhaven’s sheet prints the Kings Park agency’s phone as “(632) 466-4235.” Islip’s list gives 631-466-4235 for the same agency at the same address, so the 632 is a typo.

If your house is in another town or village, ask its building department for the current list. Each one keeps its own.

Suffolk licenses the inspectors too

Suffolk County Consumer Affairs’ license search includes an Electrical Inspector License category alongside the Master and Restricted Electrician licenses. If you are in Suffolk and want to confirm the person who shows up is licensed, you can search for them by name there.

How an inspection fits into a job

  1. The electrician pulls the permit from your town or village.
  2. Before work starts, the electrician files with an agency from that town’s list, as Brookhaven asks.
  3. For work inside walls, the agency inspects before anything is covered. East Rockaway’s permit form spells this out.
  4. When the work is done, the agency does the final inspection and issues the certificate of approval.
  5. The certificate goes to the building department to close the permit. Huntington ties it to the Certificate of Occupancy.
  6. If PSEG Long Island is setting a new meter or service, it needs the Electrical Inspection Certificate first, according to its Electrification Guideline.

What it costs and who pays

Huntington puts the cost on the permit holder, which is normally the electrician, who builds it into your price. East Rockaway says the agency’s fee is separate from the village permit fee. For a panel job, Long Island Electric Co. lists a final inspection at $85 to $185 and includes it in its own quotes. Ask whether yours does.

Old work with no certificate

Huntington’s rule covers past work as well as new: any electrical work tied to a town building permit needs an agency certificate of approval. If a finished basement, addition or pool was wired years ago and the certificate was never filed, call the building department and an agency about it well before the house goes on the market.

Questions about electrical inspections

Does my town inspect electrical work?

In most Long Island towns, no. The Town of Huntington says plainly that it does not conduct electrical inspections, and that the permit holder hires an inspector from an authorized inspection agency. Brookhaven and Islip publish lists of agencies whose certificates they accept.

Who hires and pays the inspection agency?

Huntington puts that on the permit holder, which is usually your electrician. The Village of East Rockaway notes on its electrical permit form that inspection fees are not covered by the village permit fee, so ask whether the agency fee is in your quote.

What if the last owner finished the basement without an electrical certificate?

Huntington requires a certificate of approval from an authorized agency for all electrical work tied to a town building permit, whether the work is recent or past, and makes it part of the Certificate of Occupancy. Call your building department before you list the house.

Can I pick any agency?

Pick one from your own town or village's list. Brookhaven tells permit holders to contact their chosen agency before any work starts and ask for its application and procedures.
